Chiropractic And Orthotics

What is Chiropractic?

Chiropractic in an alternative health care discipline primarily centered on the diagnosis and treatment of mechanical disorders of the musculoskeletal system. Doctors of Chiropractic are specifically trained to diagnose and treat these mechanical disorders.

Here at Cranston Chiropractic and Massage we use a non-invasive, hands-on approach to treatment. With a thorough history and examination we will determine your diagnosis and set up the most effective treatment plan. We work as a collaborative team with your with many other health care providers. Nearly any joint of the body can benefit from chiropractic treatment, including, but not limited to the: spine, shoulders, wrists, knees, hips, ankles and feet.

We support a wide range of patients. However, no two people are alike, so each treatment plan is tailored with the specific goals of each patient. We use a variety of techniques, including diversified therapy, myofascial release, and Activator©

The Diversified Chiropractic Technique encompasses a variety of treatments such as specific manual manipulation, trigger point therapy and soft tissue therapy.

Myofascial Release Therapy is a soft tissue system and movement-based massage technique that treats problems with muscles, tendons, ligaments, fascia and nerves.

Using these techniques we can treat a variety of conditions.

Did you know that 25% of the bones are in your body are in your feet? If your feet are not functioning the way they should or if they are not aligned properly, this could be the cause of pain in your knees, hips, back or further up in your body.

Orthotics are custom made shoe inserts designed to support and correct any misalignment in your feet in order to help your feet function more optimally. When orthotics are custom molded, they are made specifically for your feet and fit your particular needs. Once the orthotic is made, it is placed in your shoe and helps align your foot to encourage the most optimal and efficient functioning. At Cranston Chiropractic & Massage we offer high quality custom made orthotics manufactured by The Orthotic Group.

The majority of us have abnormally functioning feet! Normal function does include some degree of pronation (foot rolling in) and supination (foot rolling out) however; too much pronation or supination often causes problems in the feet themselves or higher up in the body.

Of all those with improper foot mechanics, nearly 90% are “overpronators”. This means that they pronate too much or for too long.
Overpronators often have low arches or flat feet. This, in turn, may contribute to conditions such as:
1. Plantar fascitis
2. Achilles tendonitis
3. Shin splints
4. Iliotibial band syndrome
5. Patellofemoral syndrome
6. Low back pain

The other 10% with abnormal foot mechanics are “oversupinators”. They often have high arches or rigid feet. Because the feet are so rigid, many oversupinators have poor shock absorption of the body’s forces. Thus, an oversupinator may be at a greater risk for developing degenerative arthritis (osteoarthritis) at the major weight bearing joints such as the knees and hips.

In addition to treatment aimed at strengthening and stretching muscles, reducing inflammation and encouraging proper joint mobility, custom made orthotics can play an integral role in the treatment of many different conditions caused by improper foot alignment and mechanics.
